“Who Wrestled With God” will take an inside look at the evolving subcultures within a community that is over 3000 years old. In Three Parts through the eyes of three young Jews from around the world.

What is Judaism? How do Jews continue to endure and evolve? What are the most pressing problems facing different Jewish communities? How can Judaism unify, or should it? This documentary is a vital portrait of Jews of all backgrounds and identities. The Judaism on TV has given the public a white-washed conception that represents only a fraction of this diverse and global community.

“I'm grateful for all the different forms of Jewishness in Judaism,” said professor Joy Ladin during one of our commentary session, “but I don't have the imagination to come up with them.  I’ve found value in all of them. And I don't find it appealing to imagine a world in which being a Jew means the same thing to everybody.”

What We've Achieved

“Who Wrestled With God” will be an inclusive story that focuses on what a Jewish identity can mean. Each person has accepted their own form of Judaism, and this story aims to share a new point of view for each Jewish viewer, and an enlightening perspective for the non-Jewish viewer. According to commentary by Dr. Joy Ladin, “Judaism is like the attic of a hoarder who's been hoarding things for three thousand years. There is literally everything in three thousand years of Judaism. There is every kind of idea and practice and ritual that you could possibly want. And it is all yours. There is no form of Jewishness or Judaism that uses all of that or even more than a small fraction. So you just go there and you see what works for you and you make it into something that's alive for you.”
